Toolkit Tuesday Lunch & Learn: An Introduction to Intellectual Property: What Is It, and What Do I Do With It?

DescriptionYou already have intellectual property. You know things about your market that others wish they knew. You have plans that only your trusted circle know about. You’ve come up with something new, or a new way of doing it. You have a name that people are associating with you and your product.

You’ve already done the first step – creating IP. Now – what do you do with it? What tools does our society have for helping you manage and protect your IP? How much does all this cost, and how long will it take? What will it all get me in the end? How will this help me build and run my business?

In one hour, you will learn about patents, trademarks, trade secrets, copyright, industrial designs and more – what they are, how to register them, why they’re important. We will also dig through top IP myths that are all too prevalent. Tom will provide usable, actionable, take-away information to allow you to make short term tactical and longer term strategic decisions about the IP you have, and the IP you will be building.

An IP Specialist at IG, Tom Nagy (B.A.Sc. – Electrical Engineering, Waterloo; B.Mus., Humber) spent the first decade of his career at Research In Motion, writing elements of the BlackBerry operating system, leading development teams, and helping craft patent applications. Later, as IP manager for Aeryon Labs, Tom built and managed a patent and trademark portfolio that played a key role in their acquisition by FLIR Systems in 2019. A founding director of consultancy proVisionIP, Tom strives to bring clarity and focus to every client’s IP management.
